UFO INTERCEPTOR AN ORIGINAL STUDIO MODEL... TO BE COPIED |

L’idea è nata da due elementi: prima di tutto la passione sviscerata che ho sempre nutrito per questo modello della serie, a mio avviso molto più interessante di tante astronavi presenti nelle attuali produzioni miliardarie americane.
The idea behind this model stems from two elements. To begin with, the visceral passion I always had for this model, which is so more intriguing than many spacecrafts we see in recent high budget American productions.

Secondo elemento, e probabilmente altrettanto importante, è stato l’aver visto numerose volte l’unico modello originale attualmente esistente della versione "large" dell’Interceptor, ora di proprietà di Phil Rae.
The second factor, as important as the first one, was having seen several times the only surviving original "large" Interceptor model, which belongs now to Phil Rae.

Questo modello è stato ricostruito magistralmente da Phil per circa il 40% della sua superficie in quanto era stato ritrovato in pessime condizioni diversi anni fa; pare si tratti proprio di quello usato dalla DINKY TOYS per realizzare il famoso die cast. Nonostante gli anni passati, il fascino e la sensazione di fantastico che in me suscitava l’Intercettore da bambino risultava ora inalterata se non moltiplicata. Ebbene, volevo anch’io il mio Interceptor, o meglio una replica il più possibile fedele all’originale….L’idea di trovarne uno originale o acquistare quello di Phil era da scartare a priori. |

This model has been masterfully restored by Phil, for about 40% of its surface, since it was found in a very damaged state several years ago; apparently, this is the model Dinky Toys used to make the well-known die-cast toy. Despite many years have passed, the fascination of the Interceptor and the sense of wonder I felt as a child did not fade away; if anything, they increased. So, I wanted my Interceptor too, or at least a good replica, as faithful as possible, since finding an original one or buying Phil's one was out of the question. |

| La prima idea è stata quella di farmene costruire uno da un modellista della mia zona facendo basare il suo lavoro sulle centinaia di foto che possiedo sia relative al modello di Phil Rae, sia alle foto sul set, sia a fotogrammi originali degli episodi in 35 mm., sia alle foto che possiedo scattate nel 1970 a tutti i modelli usati in UFO per dar modo al sig. Komatsuzaki di farne i relativi blueprints per realizzare i modelli della Bandai. Il progetto è apparso subito arduo, ho capito immediatamente che non era opportuno affidare il lavoro ad un professionista che, anche se abilissimo nel suo campo, non era un appassionato di UFO. |

The first option was commissioning the replica to a modeler living nearby. I could provide him with hundreds of photos I have: photos of Phil's model, on stage snapshots, original 35mm frames, and some photos of all original UFO models, which were taken in 1970 in order to help Mr. Komatsuzaki to come up with the blueprints for the Bandai models. The job proved immediately a tough one, and I realized that it was not advisable to rely on a professional who, however skilled, was no UFO fan. |

Ho quindi optato per David Sisson, un modellista inglese abilissimo che, oltre ad essere un appassionato della serie, aveva già realizzato per me un’ottima replica del Lunar Module. Purtroppo i tempi sono stati piuttosto lunghi, David ha impiegato circa 3 anni e mezzo a produrre il modello basando il suo lavoro, oltre che sulla sua eccezionale manualità, sulle numerosissime indicazioni che, a rischio di apparire troppo pretenzioso, gli ho imposto io. I materiali utilizzati da Sisson sono resina per il corpo e le alette del modello, plastica per i dettagli, il cockpit, il pilota ed il timone di coda e metallo per i pattini. |
Then I contacted David Sisson, a very talented English modeler who, besides being a Gerry Anderson fan, had already built for me an excellent replica of the Lunar Module. Unfortunately it took David quite a bit of time, about three years and a half, to complete the model, relying both on his exceptional manual ability and on the several suggestions I gave him, maybe at the cost of being too pretentious. The materials Sisson used are resin for the main body and the fins, plastic for small details, the cockpit, the pilot and the rudder, and metal for the skids. |

When I took it to Italy, the model looked fantastic, with the exception of the pilot (who lacked the two hands) and the cockpit which needed a few improvements. However, my eyes kept wandering on the model surface and, as time went by, I kept noticing details that I would have preferred another way. So, I made up my mind and I decided to work on the model myself for a couple of month, particularly on the pilot, the cockpit, the control panels and even on the flight instruments, which I added using photographs taken from the real cockpit on the UFO stage. |

La superficie dell’Interceptor appariva però troppo "pulita" e quindi ho curato l’aspetto relativo all’usura del modello "sporcandolo" con vernici adatte sia lungo tutte le panel lines sia attorno al bocchettone di accensione delle cariche fumogene per simularne il decollo verticale.
The two rear engine slots needed some work by cannibalizing the same kits that were used for other parts of the Interceptor and of other UFO original models. The surface also looked too "clean": in order to simulate the model wear, I got it a little dirty with suitable paints both along the panel lines and around the nozzle on the bottom of the model, where smoke candles were placed to simulate vertical takeoff. |

Finally, the anti-reflex canopy underwent some additional touches and some panel lines were added. Anche il pannello antiriflesso e buona parte delle linee dei pannelli sono state ritoccate o aggiunte dove mancavano, oltre che sporcate a dovere. |
